Macular Degeneration |
While there is no current treatment for dry macular degeneration, the rate of vision loss is less severe than wet macular degeneration, and generally occurs over a long period of time. Taking such precautions as wearing sunglasses that block UV rays, and eating foods rich in lutein, may help slow the progression of the disease. Since dry degeneration can sometimes develop into wet macular degeneration, it is important for the patient to test their vision in each eye separately every day. Any change in vision in either eye from one day to the next should be reported to your eye care specialist immediately. Wet macular degeneration is best treated during the earliest stages of the disease. There are currently several treatment options available for wet macular degeneration, including 1) conventional laser, 2) surgical removal of the blood vessel, 3) limited retinal translocation, 4) photodynamic therapy (PDT), and 5) observation only. If you have been diagnosed with wet macular degeneration, you should be evaluated by your eye care specialist to see if you are a candidate for any of these treatments. Panhandle Eye Group is proud to offer the latest information and state-of-the-art treatments for macular degeneration. |
